Introduction
:-
Water quality refers to the chemical, physical, biological characteristics
of water. It is a measure of the
condition of water relative to the requirements of one or more biotic species
and or to any human need or purpose. It is most frequently used by
reference to a set of standards against which compliance, generally achieved
through treatment of the water,
can be assessed. The most common standards used to assess water quality relate
to health of ecosystems, safety of human contact, and drinking water.
Water testing is a broad description for various
procedures used to analyze water quality.
Access
to safe drinking-water is essential to health, a basic human right and a
component of effective policy for health protection. Access to safe
drinking-water is important as a health and development issue at a national,
regional and local level.
The primary aim of the
drinking-water quality testing is the protection of public health. The parameters for water quality are
determined by the intended use. Work in the area of water quality tends to be
focused on water that is treated for human consumption, industrial use, or in the
environment.
Area Cover during Water Quality Testing
A sample survey will
be conduct at household level for water quality testing under Dimoria and
Chandrapur Block. In addition to that a
few numbers of community level
water source will be also tested at Dimoria and Chandrapur development Block
under District Project Management Unit , Neer Nirmal Pariyojana, Kamrup(M)
district.
Reason of water source contamination
The water source from
where drinking water is accessed is gradually contaminated. The main reason of
water source contamination is as follows.
- Increase of industrialization in the project area. E.g. Cement Factory, Bricks Factory, Plastic Factory, Iron Factory, Carbon Factory etc
- Increase of use of pesticide in agricultural field.
- Water contamination from improper practice of sanitation (due to lack of hygienic knowledge)
- Improper waste management ( Solid & liquid both)
- Mixing of contaminated water with clear water source during rainy season.
Reason for Water Quality Testing
It has to be observed
that the community of entire project area has access water from different
sources of their own for drinking purpose. Time to time observation/inspection
conducted under Public Health Engineering Department, Guwahati division
No-1 has been reveal that there are
different level of water contamination occurred in the water sources of the
confined area .
The main reason for
water quality testing in the project areas is as follows
- Lack of knowledge among community on safe drinking Water.
- Lack of knowledge about level of contamination of drinking water source.
- Lack of knowledge on health issues occurred due to access of contaminated drinking water.
- Disseminate Different filtration method used to access pure drinking water at house hold level as per the level of contamination of water.
- Lack of Awareness among the community for access treated piped water for drinking purpose.
Method
use for Water Quality Testing
Different method has
been involved For water quality testing conducted under NNP project area of
Kamrup (M) district. These are
- Using Field Test Kit in the community level as well as house hold level water source
- In the District Referral Laboratory, if required (present in the PHED, Guwahati Div -1.
Water quality Testing conducted under DPMU,
NNP, Kamrup(M) in Phase-1
Water quality testing by using Field Test Kit conducted by Community
Mobilizer under DPMU, NNP, Kamrup(M) has been started during the month of
March/2017. Initially the water testing has been conducted for awareness
activity for collection of community contribution. Form the month of Jul/2017 onwards
sample of house hold level and community level water sample has been collected on
regular basis and tested by the Field Test Kit at field level and report was recorded by Community
Mobilizer for as per instruction of DPMU and DPMU compiled it for future
